Old Dominion picked up a big commitment Tuesday night, as in-state quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. out of Burke (VA) Lake Braddock pledged his services to the Monarchs.

That makes three commitments for 2020, new ODU head coach Ricky Rahne’s first full class.

Edwards joins in-state wide receiver Jahee Blake and Ohio safety Brian Pinkney on ODU’s board for this class. The three-star signal-caller is ranked as the 50th-best pro-style quarterback in the nation by the 247Sports Composite. That places Edwards in the top 10 all-time among Monarch commits.

“What it came down to for me was the location of the school I think fit me best,” Edwards said. “With the new coaching staff, it’s very attractive in the sense where there’s a good opportunity there as far as playing early and helping turn around the program.”

As a junior, Edwards led his Lake Braddock team into the playoffs, falling to eventual champs South County in the 6C finals. Edwards passed for 31 touchdowns and only six interceptions during his junior season.

Edwards selected ODU over Kent State and William & Mary and now will turn to helping recruit the 2021 class. He’ll try to have an influence on in-state running back Tariq Sims from Loudoun County (VA).

“Once I let the coaching staff know about my commitment, I’m going to have them give me all the guys to go after,” Edwards said before telling ODU the good news. “I’ll go to the receivers coach and have them give me the top three that they want and then reach out to them.”

When Edwards comes in, he will join a quarterback room that will include Hayden Wolff, incoming freshman Dominique Anthony, and could include Steven Williams. Williams is currently a redshirt junior.

Edwards has seen the campus, and the new S.B. Ballard Stadium, but has not been on an official visit yet.

“If they (ODU) have them (official visits), as soon as they open back up for real this time,” Edwards said.

Edwards’ Lake Braddock team has a bye week in the second week which would line up perfectly for the newest ODU commit to come see Kornblau Field rocking when the Wake Forest Demon Deacons come to town to open the 2020 season.
