The 6’2” 220 pound Georgia quarterback’s draft stock fell steadily during the 2019 college football season. While in Athens, the Warner Robins product threw 78 touchdowns with only 18 interceptions over three seasons, and a career 156.2 Quarterback Rating. He also won the 2017 SEC Freshman of the Year award en route to an SEC Championship.

Fromm has elite anticipation on his throws, even by NFL standards. He routinely threw his receivers open, taking advantage of man-to-man coverage. His above-average short-to-mid-level accuracy caused headaches for defensive coordinators all over the Southeastern Conference. Perhaps his best tool setting him up for next-level success is his ability to read defenses both pre- and post-snap. Every year, the NFL Draft is stocked with quarterbacks who relied on athleticism at the college level. These either disappear to the bottom of an NFL depth chart or start their career as QB1 and are shown the door shortly thereafter. Jake Fromm is not one of those guys. The most successful QBs over an extended period of time are those who win with their tools above the shoulders. This bodes well for the 2018 Rose Bowl Champion.

Fromm isn’t going to successfully flee NFL defensive ends outside the pocket, or even interior defensive linemen, for that matter. His ability to extend plays doesn’t have a lot of NFL executives drooling over him. His below-average arm strength will pose problems for him when h can’t set his feet. He needs enough room to plant his back foot and get that front foot down in his delivery in order to avoid throwing balls that hang in the air long enough for NFL defensive backs to make a play.

Team Fit

The Bills spent their fifth-round draft pick on one of the most underrated players in this year’s draft. Fromm is the same QB whose IQ warned him the highest score on the Wonderlic test out of all the quarterbacks in this year’s draft. Fromm can excel in Buffalo’s passing attack by getting the ball to the right guy at the right time. Fromm will immediately improve the QB room. He can be the leader on the NFL gridiron much like he was while at Georgia. Fromm’s path to starting is a long one. Josh Allen took Buffalo to the playoffs last season.
